The Girl I Knew As A Child..,

Many years ago my Grandparents lived in the city and they had a couple who were their friends. They had a granddaughter whom I would see from time to time growing up and when our families would get together we would play together.

Her grandparents were a very nice couple and her grandmother was one of the finest cooks that I ever knew.

She could make the best cakes and pies from scratch or unlimited casseroles. When her granddaughter got older she taught her how to sew and cook as well as she did.

She loved to spend time with her grandparents whenever she had the opportunity.

Over the years she learned to do most of the things that her grandmother had taught her.

Her grandfather had worked for Ford Motor Co. and later he sold McNess and Watkins products on a route near his home.

In the Summer he would sell watermelons to his customers on this same route.

He had some little rhymes that he had made up that he would sound out as he moved through the neighborhoods.

Whats red in the middle, green on top, makes your lips go filipty flop.

Or...,

Watermelon, watermelon, juicy and sweet, jump in the rind and wash your feet.

Or...,

Watermelon man coming down the street, jump in the rind and wash your feet.

This is a picture of my mom and dad after they were married.

They are so nice looking and it makes me glad that they are my parents.

Here is a picture of this little girl with her parents and she is less than a year old.

She is to small to know that she would grow up in a great family, surrounded with love and affection and attention from her loving parents and grandparents.

Her mom was a housewife and she doted over their first child and made sure that she was woken up and fed and loved and nurtured as a child that was loved.

They later on had four other children but she was always "special," because she was their first.

Deborah was named after her mother having her mothers name as her middle name, but as she grew up she shortened it to Debby.

Here she has her picture taken posing on a pile of blankets.

She loved to have her picture taken when she was younger and being the first child they took a few pictures.

This is a little dress that her grandmother made for her and as you can see she does excellent work. Debby is standing on the dresser in the bedroom and it is like a double exposure.

This picture shows her talking on the phone.

She loved to talk with her grandmother and granddad on the phone as well as her dad.

She is such a cutie with her dark brown hair and her green eyes.

Another posing baby picture.

She is getting close to a year old.

Celebrating her first birthday.

One day a man came by their house to take pictures of little kids with farm animals and her parents chose this horse above for her to have her picture taken on it.

On a visit to her grandmother's house she liked to sit on the back porch steps with her Uncle Ben. He would take time to play with her and tease her at every opportunity that he had.

Before long another surprise came home from the hospital and this time it was a little brother and they named him James Wayne but, they called him Wayne.

Later own another child came along and she was named Emily and then a boy was born and he was named Kenny.  We became a family of seven and we had so much fun growing up together.

Emily, Pat, Debby, Joyce, Pam and Tami all dressed up for a "Special Occasion."

Our last portrait taken before she got married. (Pat, Kenny, Debby, Emily and Wayne).

This is the girl that I knew as a child that grew up to be a "beautiful," lady and the "love of my life." This is one of my favorite pictures of the lady that accepted my hand in marriage.

Standing in front of the Ghost Town Stage Coach on our Honeymoon.

This picture of my wife and her parents when she came home for her sister's graduation.

One of the first pictures we had made after we were married.

Her siblings in a picture together. (Debby, Pat, Emily, Wayne and Kenny).

A family portrait that I shot of their family. (1st. row: Mom and Dad, 2nd. row: Pat, Wayne, Kenny, and Emily, 3rd. row: Debby).

Another family picture when her brother Wayne got married.

This family picture was taken at her grandmother's house after having Sunday dinner there. All of her siblings are married except Emily. The handsome little boy in the front is our son David.

My wife and I were on a trip to Detroit on a trip we won with Lincoln Motor Company. Lincoln put us up in the Ritz Carlton in Dearborn, Michigan.

I found someone who would take a picture of us sitting together. I hope I don't break the camera.

We as you can tell by now the little girl I grew up knowing whenever we came to visit my grandparents I fell in love with along through the years. We have been married for over forty years and we have one son and a beautiful grand daughter who make our little family complete. Yes there could be more pictures but, I think that will save some for another post.

Throw Back Thursday

On FB you will find postings of pictures past, so I decided to make today's post a throwback from my past.

One a trip to Atlanta with my family we had this picture taken in one of those do-it-yourself photo booths. I must say most times the pictures were somewhat fuzzy, but this one turned out ok.

I was almost five when this picture was taken. I remember this little coat that my grandmother made for me out of corduroy. How about those dimples in my cheek, I used to think I got them from my uncles pinching my cheeks every time I would see them.

This is my first grade class picture, as I look back at it today I don't think I have changed much over the tears except I have longer hair and more weight.

This picture was taken the summer after being in the first grade. I had already turned seven and I remember this like it was yesterday. It was taken in Cherokee N.C. in the Indian Village there. As we were riding up my loafer came loose on my foot and dropped to the ground and it was never found. That's one way to get a new pair of shoes.

This is my 3rd grade class picture, my hair is a little longer but it wouldn't stay in place when it was combed.

I am finally in the fourth grade and here is my class picture. Yes I swallowed a dollar bill and it broke out in pennies on my face.

Here is another picture taken in one of those photo booths. I am holding my niece, that I am so proud of after all she made me an uncle at the old age of nine.

Here I am on our Honeymoon, standing by a stagecoach in Maggie Valley, N.C.

This picture was taken in the summer of 1973.

These are flowers for our anniversary taken in Georgia when we lived in Commerce.

Another picture taken at the same time as the one above. In the seventies we tended to wear our hair a little longer.

A Happy Anniversary Cake made "special" from my wife. She is such a "great" cook.

As Sales Leader of the Year for Lincoln-Mercury I won a trip for two to Detroit, MI. It was a great trip and Ford was opening the Ritz Carlton that week and this is where we stayed. We got the royal treatment and had a great ten days there.

One of our first pictures taken as a couple.

Happy Valentine's Day for my "Sweet Wife," on Valentines day in 1972.

This is a picture of the cake my wife made for her baby sister when she graduated from High School.

I took this selfie with my first cell phone with a camera in early 2000's.

This picture was taken in November 2012 while watching my grand daughter play with Skye at Pop's house.

The Little Red Car

Chloe informed me this week that she has out grown her "little red car," and it was time for me to store it away in the attic.

I said that we could sell it and she could have the money, knowing all the time that I could never sell it because of all the memories connected to this little car.

"No," she said, I want to keep it and when I have kids they will want to ride in it at your house and have as much fun as I have riding in it.

She reminded me again the fun she had of finding the red car and of all the fun that she had, had riding and playing in it and that is was also an antique. I asked her, "How did you know that it was an antique." Well when we first got it you said the it was made in 1957 and that is old and so it is an antique." Then I told her, "Well I must be and old antique because I'm older than that."

"Poppy,  your a person they get older only old things become antiques."

Ms Snaggle Tooth

A months ago I had a post showing where Chloe had lost her first tooth. It had become so loose and it looked like it would fall out if she sneezed real hard. She wouldn't let me tempt to try and pull it out for fear that the tooth fairy wouldn't give her any money if she wasn't at home when her tooth came out.

The next time we saw her she had lost her first tooth and she looked so cute. We new that she would be getting her new permanent tooth soon.

Well a few weeks later she lost the tooth beside the first tooth on the bottom front. She exclaimed, "Look I can put the straw in my mouth and not have to open my mouth!" I told her that when she pulled the next tooth that if she didn't slide her tongue into the spot where the new tooth had come out a gold tooth would grow back in it's place. She looked at me and then grinned, "Poppy your teasing me again."

Everyone knows that you don't get a gold tooth, but you do try to keep your tongue out to try it but it is impossible.

Her two new bottom teeth are coming through nicely and she is so proud of these new teeth. She wants to brush her teeth more often now because she knows that these are her permanent teeth.

Well this past Friday when I picked her up from school I was surprised to see that had she not lost just another tooth but both of the two top front teeth.

She was quick to inform me that the tooth fairy had left her $3 for each tooth and she now has a lot of green backs. I already knew what was coming next. And yes Poppy matched what the tooth fairy paid for each tooth. Grandparents become like little kids around their grand kids, it's funny how we get wrapped around their fingers.

I started to tell her that, "All that she would get for Christmas would be her two front teeth," when she stopped me and said, "Mimi had already told her that and Mommy had told her that God makes her teeth and I could stop crying, because I would still get Christmas presents."

I believe that you will agree with me, "She looks so cute with her snaggle teeth.

Let's Go To Taco Bell

Usually every weekend we ask Chloe where she wants to go and eat. It is usually McDonald's, Wendy's, Chinese Food, or Captain D's. She loves the indoor playground at McDonald's and at Wendy's she loves their drink machine that has over 101 flavor combinations of fountain drinks. She loves the Chinese Restaurant for their shrimp and it also had a large fish tank that she is fascinated with. And at Captain D's she loves their fried shrimp and the Mr. Pibbs drink that tastes like Dr. Pepper.

But today she tells us that she wants to go to Taco Bell and sit up on the tall seats and have herself a Taco.
O explained to her that yes we would go and that she could sit in the tall seats even if we couldn't because we are older but, she had to eat what she ordered.

She gets her taco and it looks as big as she is almost and proceeds to eat it while we all sat up in the tall chairs.

Debby and I are both surprised as she is eating her taco. Normally she will only eat her food plain with just cheese added and no food mixed together. But she is hungry and sh is enjoying her taco.

She decides during her meal that she wants to sit across from us so we move her food and she sit across from us.

This is much better we can sit and talk and eat and enjoy our meal much better.
